“Don’t Touch Him” Museveni Allegedly Stops Son From Arresting Bobi Wine

Must read

A quiet but serious power struggle is happening at the top of Uganda’s leadership. President Yoweri Museveni recently stopped an attempt by his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to arrest opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known to many as Bobi Wine. This surprising move has caused tension in the security circles and revealed cracks in the country’s leadership as Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections.

The problem started when Gen. Muhoozi, who is the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), made a strong phone call to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba. In that call, Muhoozi ordered the immediate arrest of Bobi Wine. This happened shortly after several of Bobi Wine’s bodyguards had already been arrested, which caused protests in parts of Kampala.

IGP Byakagaba at first appeared to agree to Muhoozi’s order. But before acting, he decided to inform President Museveni. During their discussion, Museveni asked a direct question: “What has Bobi Wine done?” When the police chief admitted there was no valid reason, Museveni firmly said, “Don’t touch Bobi Wine without cause!”

President Museveni’s strong stance stopped the plan. But Gen. Muhoozi was not happy. Feeling undermined and angry, he gave fresh orders to the military police to arrest Bobi Wine anyway. However, the military police also checked with the IGP and, out of respect for Museveni’s authority as the Commander-in-Chief, they refused to move forward.

This event has raised questions about the unity within Uganda’s top leadership. Many believe Gen. Muhoozi is pushing hard to show political power, possibly preparing for a future presidential run. His tough attitude toward Bobi Wine shows that he sees the opposition leader as a real threat to the current regime.

On the other hand, Museveni seems to be taking a cautious approach. He knows that Uganda has faced harsh international criticism in the past for arresting political opponents without cause. The 2020 violent arrest of Bobi Wine in Luuka and earlier detentions of Dr. Kizza Besigye caused major outcry around the world. This time, Museveni appears determined to avoid repeating those mistakes.

While all this unfolds, Bobi Wine has not publicly reacted to the attempted arrest. He continues to travel across the country, meeting supporters and gathering strength for the 2026 elections.

This growing tension between father and son, and within the security forces, is more than just a family disagreement. It is a sign of deeper political struggles that could shape the future of Uganda. Many citizens are watching closely, wondering what will happen next in this ongoing power battle.
