In a bold and fiery statement on Twitter, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that Ugandan troops had killed more than 100 Al-Shabaab fighters in a recent battle in Bariire, Somalia. The general, who is known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial remarks, did not hold back. “So far we have killed at least 100 of these fools (Al-Shabaab rebels) in Bariire. More will follow,” he wrote.
General Muhoozi is the son of Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni, and a high-ranking officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). Uganda has been a major player in peacekeeping missions in Somalia for many years. Its soldiers are part of the African Union’s ATMIS force, which is fighting to push back the terrorist group Al-Shabaab and bring stability to the country.
Bariire, where the fighting took place, is a hotspot for clashes between Al-Shabaab militants and international troops. Located in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia, the town has seen many battles over the years. This latest operation by the UPDF appears to have been one of the deadliest, with over 100 rebels reportedly killed.
Muhoozi’s message was clear: the fight against Al-Shabaab is far from over. By saying, “More will follow,” he signaled that Ugandan forces are ready to continue operations against the group. While some praised his courage and leadership, others criticized the harsh tone of his message, especially the use of the word “fools” to describe the enemy.
Still, the statement shows Uganda’s strong commitment to the war on terror in the region. With threats from extremist groups growing in East Africa, many believe bold action is necessary. Whether one agrees with his words or not, General Muhoozi’s post has drawn attention and made it clear that the UPDF is not backing down.
As tensions remain high, all eyes are on Somalia and the next move in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab.
