Electoral Commission Approves Symbols For Independent Political Candidates

Must read

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 General Elections, independent candidates will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of approved election symbols. These symbols, approved by the Uganda Electoral Commission (@UgandaEC), will help voters easily identify candidates on the ballot. Each symbol is unique and represents an independent aspirant in a clear and recognizable way.

Candidates will pick their symbols on a first-come, first-served basis during the nomination process. The selection includes everyday objects and items that are familiar to many Ugandans. Among the options are a ball, banana, boat, book, and borehole. Other symbols include a candle, car, chair, clock, coffee, cup, house, jerrycan, kettle, and megaphone. Additionally, there are practical household items such as a pot, radio, saucepan, table, and television.

The use of these symbols is especially important in helping voters who may have difficulty reading or remembering candidate names. By associating a candidate with a clear and familiar symbol, the Electoral Commission ensures that every voter can make their choice confidently. Independent candidates now have the chance to select a symbol that best represents them, their values, or their campaign message. This system also adds an interesting and visual element to the voting process, making the elections more accessible and voter-friendly.

As the 2026 elections approach, it is important for every voter to be aware of these symbols and what they stand for. Being informed ensures that every vote counts and that the democratic process in Uganda remains strong, transparent, and fair.
