Overloaded Vans Cause Chaos at Buwenge Checkpoint

Must read

The Uganda Police have issued a strong warning to motorists and the public after a shocking incident at the Buwenge checkpoint in Jinja. Police officers on duty intercepted two vans carrying football fans who were traveling to Jinja for a match. The vans were each licensed to carry only 14 passengers, but officers were alarmed to find that each was dangerously overloaded with around 40 people.

When the enforcement team stopped the vehicles for inspection, the situation quickly got out of control. The passengers, instead of cooperating, turned violent. They dismantled the checkpoint, confronted the officers, and then drove off at high speed. The police have since identified those involved, and they are facing charges for their reckless actions. Authorities have promised that all individuals responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice.

Police have described the incident as a serious reminder of the dangers of overloading and obstructing law enforcement. Overloading vehicles not only breaks traffic laws but also puts the lives of passengers and other road users at great risk. Many road crashes in Uganda have been caused by such careless behavior. What begins as a fun trip to watch a football match can easily turn into a tragedy if safety is ignored.

The Uganda Police are urging all drivers, passengers, and transport operators to respect traffic rules and prioritize safety over excitement, profit, or convenience. Road safety, they emphasize, is everyone’s responsibility. The message is clear: no celebration is worth risking lives.
