EC Issues Key Guidelines as MP and Local Government Campaigns Kick Off

Must read

As campaigns for Members of Parliament and Local Government leaders officially begin today, the Uganda Electoral Commission (@UgandaEC) has released important guidelines and warnings to ensure that the electoral process is peaceful, fair, and orderly. Candidates, their supporters, and agents are expected to conduct campaigns responsibly and within the law.

The EC has set strict hours for campaigning, allowing activities only between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is to ensure that campaign activities do not disrupt the daily lives of citizens. Candidates and their teams are also reminded that bribing voters is illegal. Both the giver and receiver of bribes can face heavy fines, imprisonment, or both if convicted.

Respect and unity are highly emphasized. Candidates and their supporters must avoid hate speech or divisive language based on tribe, ethnicity, region, or religion. Social media should not be used to spread lies, fake news, propaganda, or misinformation that could mislead the public or create tension.

The EC also stresses the importance of avoiding campaign activities in sensitive areas such as public roads, markets, schools, and hospitals. Campaign noise and activities should not disturb normal business or academic activities, especially with Senior Six students sitting their final exams.

All participants in the campaigns are urged to treat each other with respect. Supporting a different candidate or political party is a democratic right and should not be met with hostility or aggression. Violence, intimidation, or any unlawful acts will not be tolerated. Maintaining law and order is a responsibility for everyone involved.

Finally, the UgandaEC reminds the public that elections are not a “do or die” affair. Campaigns and elections are opportunities for citizens to exercise their democratic rights, but they must be conducted peacefully to ensure the country remains united, stable, and progressing. By following these guidelines, Uganda can hold campaigns and elections that reflect fairness, respect, and a commitment to the common good.
