Uganda’s Path to Fair and Free Elections!! Progress So Far

Must read

As Uganda approaches its 2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has shared exciting updates on the progress of preparations for the highly anticipated elections. Following the roadmap launched in 2023 and revised in 2024, the commission has made significant strides to ensure that the elections are fair, transparent, and inclusive.

Voter Registration Update:
As of November 2025, the total number of registered voters stands at an impressive 21.68 million. Among them, there are 10.33 million male voters and 11.34 million female voters, highlighting a balanced representation of both genders. The Electoral Commission has worked diligently to ensure that all eligible citizens are properly registered and that their details are accurately reflected in the National Voters Register.

Key Electoral Areas and Milestones:
The number of polling stations across Uganda is set at 50,739, with voters across the country now having access to their designated voting areas. Furthermore, the number of districts has increased to 146, and there are 2,191 sub-counties where elections will take place. The Commission has also completed the demarcation of local government electoral areas, ensuring that no eligible voter is left behind in the process.

In addition, the EC has been working hard to streamline the election process by re-organizing polling stations and ensuring efficient systems are in place for the upcoming elections. By doing so, they aim to reduce congestion and long waits, ensuring a smooth voting experience for Ugandans nationwide.

Biometric Voter Verification and Technology:
In an effort to enhance voter security, the EC has procured 109,142 Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVK) to be deployed at each polling station. This technology will use fingerprints and facial recognition to confirm the identity of voters, making it nearly impossible for anyone to vote more than once. The BVVK technology, which was first used in Uganda’s 2016 General Elections, has been improved for 2026, and the commission is training staff on how to effectively use it.

With all these developments, it’s clear that the Electoral Commission is making steady progress in preparing for the 2026 General Elections. As the election period draws closer, Ugandans are encouraged to stay informed, engage with the process, and prepare to vote for their leaders at all levels.
