On the night of January 3, 2026, an alarming incident unfolded at the Kamakya Gold Ore Processing Plant, located in the Lugongwe LC1 area of Kassanda District. A group of burglars attempted to break into the facility around 8:40 PM. The facility, known for its high-security measures due to its valuable operations, was guarded by Onyait Daniel, a security guard employed by Quantico Securico Company.
Daniel noticed suspicious movement near the plant at an unusual hour and quickly approached the individuals. When he tried to stop them for identification, the intruders scattered, fleeing in different directions. Fearing the situation could escalate, Daniel discharged his firearm, aiming at one of the fleeing figures. The bullet struck the man in the chest, and he fell to the ground, lifeless.
The alarmed security personnel immediately called for help, and within minutes, officers from the Lugongwe Police Mineral Protection Unit, led by Sergeant Makhoha Jimmy, arrived at the scene. They were soon joined by the Scene of Crime Officer from Kassanda District. The body of the unidentified man was swiftly removed and taken to the Kassanda Health Center 4 Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Authorities later recovered a submachine gun (AK47) from the scene, which had been abandoned by the intruder.
Onyait Daniel, the security guard who shot the trespasser, is now in police custody for questioning. The police are working to determine the exact circumstances of the shooting and whether the guard acted in self-defense or if other factors were involved. Authorities are urging the public, especially those living near the Kamakya Gold Ore Processing Plant, to avoid trespassing in such highly secure areas. Anyone who must enter the premises is advised to obtain prior permission from the plant’s management.
The shooting has raised concerns about security around the processing plant, which has become a high-value target for criminals seeking to steal gold. While the death of the intruder has led to an ongoing investigation, police have cautioned the community to be vigilant and refrain from any unlawful activity around such sensitive areas.
