Veteran politician Miria Matembe has been remanded to Luzira Prison until July 1, 2026, after appearing before the Luzira Magistrate’s Court where she is facing a charge of promoting sectarianism.
Matembe appeared in court earlier today amid public attention surrounding the case, which has drawn concern from sections of the political opposition and civil society.
According to reports shared under #NBSUpdates, the court ordered that the former minister be held in custody as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
The development follows earlier comments by National Unity Platform Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, who had visited the court in solidarity and raised concerns about Matembe’s health condition, describing her as visibly weak and frail.
The prosecution has not yet disclosed full details of the allegations, but the charge of promoting sectarianism is expected to proceed through the normal judicial process when the case returns to court.
