Government of Uganda has officially launched the national roll-out of Skeepon Technology (SKP), a new climate-smart agricultural innovation designed to help farmers fight drought, heat stress and unpredictable rainfall. The launch took place at the 2026 National Agricultural Show in Jinja and was led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
The government said the technology comes at a critical time when Uganda is facing increasing climate challenges such as long dry spells, rising temperatures and unstable rainfall patterns. These conditions have continued to affect food production, household incomes and overall economic growth.
Skeepon Technology works as a plant bio-stimulant that strengthens crops’ natural ability to withstand drought and heat. Once applied, it allows crops to continue growing under water stress for up to three months while improving plant health and productivity.
Field trials carried out by the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) showed strong results, including over 30 percent higher maize yields and more than 45 percent higher vegetable yields compared to untreated crops. Researchers also reported improved plant growth, stronger crop performance and better resistance to harsh weather conditions.
Officials explained that the innovation will work alongside existing farming inputs such as irrigation, fertilizers and improved seeds. It is also affordable, costing between UGX 12,000 and 27,000 per acre, making it accessible to many smallholder farmers across the country.
The government also announced plans to explore local production of the technology in Uganda to reduce import costs and create jobs. Skeepon is expected to improve food security, increase farmer incomes and support Uganda’s wider goal of agricultural transformation under national development plans.
