The Kampala Metropolitan Police has carried out a series of intensive night operations across several parts of Kampala and Wakiso districts, leading to the arrest of 79 suspects linked to various criminal activities. The coordinated exercise took place on the nights of 9th and 10th June 2026 and involved police officers working together with local leaders and community security stakeholders. The main aim of the operation was to disrupt criminal networks and reduce rising cases of drug abuse, robberies, and theft.
According to police, the targeted areas were identified as crime hotspots where criminal elements often gather to plan and execute illegal activities. These included Biina A and Biina B in Butabika, Biwologoma, Old Taxi Park, Wilson Road, Nile Coach, City Square, Yesu Amala, Kyebando, Masitowa, Ganda, Bujjuko, and Ngobe Cell. Many of these locations are known for high foot traffic and informal settlements, making them vulnerable to criminal behaviour.
During the operations, police say they recovered narcotic substances such as marijuana and opium, as well as tools suspected to be used in house breakings. Some of the arrested individuals are believed to be repeat offenders who have previously been linked to similar crimes. Authorities noted that the presence of drugs was a major factor contributing to the rise in street-level offences, including phone snatching, assaults, and theft.
The suspects were charged accordingly and are currently being held at different police stations as investigations continue. Police also secured the recovered exhibits, which will be used as evidence in upcoming prosecutions. Officials emphasized that due process will be followed as each case is reviewed and taken to court where necessary.
Police leadership commended members of the public for their cooperation in providing information that helped guide the operations. They urged residents to remain alert and continue sharing intelligence on suspicious activities in their communities. The Kampala Metropolitan Police further reaffirmed its commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at improving safety, restoring order, and curbing criminal activity across the metropolitan area.
