The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially announced the programme for the by-election of the District Chairperson in Kikuube District. The process, set to take place between April and June 2026, aims to ensure a transparent, fair, and inclusive election for all residents. The Commission has called on all stakeholders in the district to participate actively and follow the outlined schedule.
The by-election programme begins with a stakeholders’ meeting and press briefing on 27th April 2026. This will be followed by the update of the National Voters’ Register at the parish level from 28th to 30th April. The cut-off date for registration of voters and transfer of voting locations in Kikuube District is 30th April, giving residents a clear timeframe to ensure they are correctly registered. Recruitment of officials to handle the display of the Voters’ Register will take place from 27th to 29th April, and these lists will be available at district and sub-county headquarters between 30th April and 5th May.
To prepare for the voting process, the Commission will train officials, issue voter location slips, and appoint supervisors on 7th May. A special display of the Voters’ Register at polling stations will take place from 8th to 12th May, giving voters a chance to verify their details. Following this, parish tribunal recommendations for corrections will be displayed from 13th to 15th May.
Candidate nomination is scheduled for 25th and 26th May at Kikuube District headquarters. This will be followed by a period for inspection of nomination papers and lodging complaints from 26th May to 1st June. The Returning Officer will then meet candidates on 27th May to harmonize campaign programmes and form liaison committees. The official campaign period will run from 28th May to 8th June.
Polling day is set for 10th June 2026, after a detailed process of recruiting polling day officials, issuing accreditation tags, and preparing voting materials. The Electoral Commission has emphasized that these activities are designed to uphold the principles of a free, fair, and transparent election.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, urges everyone in Kikuube District to participate in the election process responsibly and contribute to strengthening democracy in the region.
