In a strong move against corruption, the Inspectorate of Government (IG) has successfully recovered more than UGX 300 million from public officials who had failed to return government funds. According to a press statement released on 8th April 2026, a total of UGX 335,679,355 has been collected from 62 officials out of 202 who were identified as defaulters. These officials had previously been ordered to refund money that was improperly used.
The recovery effort follows a public notice issued by the IG, which revealed that over UGX 2.3 billion had been misused by public officials for personal gain. This misuse of funds had negatively affected public service delivery, denying citizens the services they depend on. The government’s action shows a clear intention to hold those responsible accountable and to protect public resources.
Out of the 62 officials who have made payments, 38 cleared their debts in full, contributing over UGX 214 million. Meanwhile, 24 others made partial payments totaling more than UGX 121 million. This indicates that while some officials are cooperating fully, others are still in the process of meeting their obligations.
However, a large number—140 officials—have not yet made any payments. Among them, only two have taken steps by surrendering properties, which will be evaluated by the IG to recover the owed funds. This highlights that there is still a long way to go in ensuring full accountability.
The IG has made it clear that this is just the beginning. Officials who continue to ignore lawful orders to refund the money will face serious legal consequences, including charges related to abuse of office and disobedience of authority. This firm stance sends a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated.
Overall, these recoveries demonstrate the IG’s commitment to promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability in public service. It also gives hope that public funds can be protected and recovered, ensuring they are used for the benefit of all citizens.
