Luzira Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to veteran politician Dr Miria Matembe, citing her ill health, advanced age, and the constitutional presumption of innocence.
The court’s decision comes days after Matembe was remanded to Luzira Prison following her appearance on charges related to promoting sectarianism.
In delivering the ruling, the magistrate noted that the accused had satisfied the conditions for bail and emphasized that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
The court further considered Matembe’s age and reported health condition, which her legal team argued required special medical attention while she prepares her defense.
The former Ethics and Integrity Minister was subsequently released from custody and is expected to return to court on a date that will be communicated as the case proceeds.
Matembe’s arrest and prosecution have attracted significant public interest, with supporters and political observers closely following the developments.
The case remains before the courts, and investigations and legal proceedings are expected to continue.
