Police in Kabale District are holding a 53-year-old man after a 60-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death during a confrontation in Kitumba Sub-county.
The suspect has been identified as Mubangizi Silva, who is currently detained at Kabale Central Police Station (CPS) on allegations of murder by hacking.
The deceased has been identified as Byaruhanga Emmanuel, a 60-year-old resident of Ihimbi Cell, Rutooma Ward, Northern Division in Kabale Municipality.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at around 7:30pm in Kabindi Cell, Bushuro Parish, Kitumba Sub-county, Kabale District.
Police said the incident reportedly began when Mubangizi got into a fight with his wife. Byaruhanga is said to have intervened and separated the couple.
However, police allege that Mubangizi became angry with Byaruhanga after the intervention. The suspect allegedly started abusing the deceased before picking up a panga and attacking him.
Byaruhanga sustained serious injuries and later died. Police officers responded to the scene and conveyed his body to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, where a postmortem examination was conducted.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and what led to the deadly confrontation.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime confirmed the incident and said police are handling the matter in accordance with the law.
The incident has left residents shocked, while police continue to urge members of the public to resolve domestic and community disagreements peacefully instead of resorting to violence.
