Police is investigating a tragic incident that led to the death of a police officer following a violent confrontation in Gulu City. The incident occurred on 22 April 2026 at around 2:30 PM in Library Cell, Bardeg Layibi Division, where a love dispute between two individuals ended in fatal violence.
The deceased has been identified as No. 82983 PC Akera Harriet, a female police officer attached to Namukosi Police Station in Mityana District. She had travelled from Mityana to Gulu City to meet her boyfriend, Apiire Denis Brian, a 26-year-old mobile money agent and resident of Laliya Dwol Cell in Bardeg Layibi Division. The two had been in a romantic relationship since 2023, but recent misunderstandings had caused tension between them.
Reports indicate that the officer arrived in Gulu on 21 April 2026 and met the suspect the following morning at Flamingo Guest House around 7:00 AM. The two reportedly discussed their relationship issues but later parted ways. However, they met again at around 2:10 PM in Library Cell, where another discussion turned into a quarrel.
During the confrontation, the deceased reportedly attempted to apprehend the suspect after raising alarm and accusing him of being a thief. It is alleged that the suspect suddenly produced a knife from his waist and stabbed the officer, striking her in the back and shoulder area. She collapsed and was quickly rushed by members of the public to Victory Health Centre for first aid before being referred to Lacor Hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at around 4:50 PM.
Police responded swiftly to the scene, led by D/IP Mugisha B. John, and documented it with support from the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO). The suspect was rescued from an angry mob and taken into custody. A sharp knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered as an exhibit. Statements from witnesses were also recorded, and a postmortem form (PF 48) was prepared.
Preliminary findings show that the relationship between the two had been ongoing since 2023 and had recently become strained due to personal disagreements. It is also reported that the suspect had purchased the knife earlier that day at Chereleno Market.
Police investigations are ongoing, and a full report will be submitted to the relevant authorities as more details emerge.
