Uganda Airlines has taken a major step forward in its growth journey after signing a Shs3.7 trillion agreement with Boeing to acquire 10 new aircraft. The deal was officially witnessed by President Yoweri Museveni at State House, marking a big moment for Uganda’s national carrier and its long-term plans to expand across the world.
The agreement includes eight passenger planes and two cargo freighters. Among the cargo aircraft are a Boeing 767 wide-body converted freighter and a Boeing 737 Boeing Converted Freighter. These planes are expected to improve the airline’s ability to transport both people and goods more efficiently.
Government officials, Boeing representatives, members of the Uganda Airlines board, and aviation stakeholders attended the signing ceremony. Their presence showed the importance of the deal not only for the airline but also for Uganda’s wider transport and economic goals.
Uganda Airlines said the new aircraft will help it grow its routes and serve more destinations in Africa and beyond. The airline also hopes to improve flight frequency, reduce travel challenges, and offer better services to passengers.
The expansion is also expected to boost trade. With stronger cargo services, Ugandan exporters will find it easier to send goods such as agricultural products, minerals, and manufactured items to international markets. This is expected to support business growth across different sectors.
Tourism is another area that could benefit from the deal. More passenger aircraft means more seats and better connectivity, making it easier for visitors to travel to Uganda and explore its attractions. This could help increase the number of tourists visiting the country.
The deal also supports Uganda’s long-term development plan under Vision 2040. A stronger airline industry is seen as important for economic growth, job creation, and attracting investment into the country. Better air transport will also help connect Uganda more closely to global markets.
Boeing has also promised to support Uganda Airlines beyond just delivering aircraft. The company will provide technical assistance, training, and capacity-building programs to help the airline operate and maintain the new fleet effectively. This partnership is expected to strengthen Uganda Airlines as it grows into a more competitive regional carrier.
