In a surprising but carefully considered move, Speaker Anita Annet Among has officially announced that she will not contest for the Speakership position in Uganda’s 12th Parliament. Her statement, released after what she described as “wide consultations and deep introspection,” has sparked discussion across the political landscape, with many interpreting it as a strong gesture of loyalty and party unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Among explained that her decision was guided by the need to maintain harmony, clarity, and stability within the NRM party. She emphasized that her personal ambitions should never come before the interests of the party and the country. By stepping aside, she signaled her commitment to supporting the leadership direction chosen by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the NRM.
The outgoing Speaker expressed deep gratitude to President Museveni, the NRM leadership, and Members of Parliament for entrusting her with the responsibility of serving first as Deputy Speaker and later as Speaker of Parliament. She described the opportunity as an honor that allowed her to contribute to Uganda’s governance and democratic processes over the last five years.
Among also took time to thank her family, friends, and supporters who stood by her during her tenure in office. She acknowledged the solidarity and encouragement they gave her throughout both the challenging and successful moments of her leadership journey. Her message reflected humility and appreciation, qualities that have shaped much of her political image.
In her statement, Anita Among pledged full support to whichever candidates will eventually be endorsed by President Museveni and the NRM party for the Speakership race. She called upon all Members of Parliament entering the 12th Parliament to rally behind the party’s official position in the spirit of unity and discipline. Political analysts say this appeal could play a major role in calming tensions and preventing divisions within the ruling party ahead of the new parliamentary term.
The Speaker also addressed the ongoing investigations surrounding allegations that have recently been raised against her. She stated that she remains ready and willing to cooperate fully with all relevant state agencies to ensure that the truth is established. This part of her statement appeared aimed at reinforcing public confidence and demonstrating accountability during a sensitive political period.
Despite stepping away from the Speakership race, Anita Among made it clear that she is still ready to serve Uganda in any capacity assigned to her by the President and the NRM party. Her declaration suggests that she remains committed to public service and active participation in national leadership.
Her closing words, “For God and My Country,” carried a patriotic tone that resonated with many supporters and observers. As Uganda prepares for the next Parliament, Among’s withdrawal marks a significant turning point in the Speakership contest and may reshape political alignments within the ruling party in the months ahead.
