The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has commissioned newly acquired modern marine vessels to strengthen the capacity of the Uganda Police Marine Unit in protecting the country’s water bodies.
The commissioning ceremony was held at the Uganda Police Marine Unit Headquarters in Kigo, where the new vessels were officially handed over for operational use.
The advanced boats are expected to significantly improve the Marine Unit’s ability to carry out patrols on Uganda’s lakes and other waterways, while also enhancing emergency response, search and rescue operations.
Police said the acquisition of the vessels will help officers respond faster to incidents on water, including accidents, security threats, and other emergencies requiring immediate intervention.
The new equipment is part of efforts by the Uganda Police Force to modernise its operations and improve safety and security within Uganda’s maritime environment.
With Uganda relying heavily on water transport and having several major water bodies, including Lake Victoria, the strengthened Marine Unit is expected to play a key role in protecting lives, preventing crime, and ensuring safer movement on the waters.
IGP Byakagaba said the improved marine capacity will support officers in delivering more effective services and maintaining security across the country’s waterways. The new vessels mark another step in enhancing the Police Force’s operational readiness and response capabilities.
