Anti-Corruption Court Remands Businessman Over UGX 13 Billion Fake Gold Scam

Must read

Anti-Corruption Court has remanded businessman Muhammad Ali to prison after he was re-arraigned on fresh charges of forgery and uttering false documents linked to an alleged UGX 13 billion fake gold scam that targeted investors from Dubai.

Muhammad Ali appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday following a joint operation by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). He was remanded until 31st July 2026 as investigations continue.

According to prosecutors, the fresh charges stem from allegations that the businessman used forged documents to secure bail while facing prosecution in the main fake gold case. Investigators say the documents presented to court were fake and were intended to mislead the judicial process.

The principal case involves an alleged fake gold scam worth USD 3.5 million, approximately UGX 13 billion, in which Dubai-based investors were reportedly defrauded after being promised genuine gold that authorities believe did not exist.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit said investigators have since developed key leads on other individuals suspected to have played a role in the fraud. The suspects are currently on the run, and security agencies have intensified efforts to track them down.

Authorities have vowed to ensure that every suspect linked to the alleged scam is arrested and brought before court. The investigations are ongoing as law enforcement agencies work to uncover the full network behind the high-profile gold fraud.

Muhammad Ali will remain on remand until 31st July 2026, when he is expected to return to court for further proceedings.
