Police in Jinja Road Division carried out a major early morning operation on 28/05/2026 aimed at curbing rising cases of phone snatching, theft of vehicle side mirrors, and other criminal activities along Jinja Road traffic lights in Kampala. The operation followed growing public concern over insecurity in the area, especially targeting pedestrians and motorists during busy hours.
The operation took place between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. in several hotspot areas including Wampewo, Punjan, the former Electoral Commission offices, and the busy Jinja Road traffic lights within Central Division. These locations had reportedly become common points for petty crimes that have been disturbing road users and residents.
During the crackdown, police arrested eight suspects. According to preliminary investigations, some of the suspects had been posing as hawkers and vendors during the day while allegedly taking part in criminal activities along the roadside. This method made it difficult for the public to easily identify those involved in crime.
Police say the suspects have been charged and are currently waiting to appear before court. Authorities believe this arrest is part of a wider network of street crime that has been affecting safety and confidence in the area.
Security officials have also confirmed that similar operations will continue in Kampala Metropolitan Area. The aim is to remove criminal elements from busy streets and restore safety for both pedestrians and motorists who use these roads daily.
