Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi has been retained as the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Uganda by the National Unity Platform (NUP). This decision confirms his continued role as the main voice of the opposition in the House, where he is expected to lead debates, challenge government proposals, and coordinate opposition activities.
Alongside this decision, NUP has also made new appointments within its parliamentary leadership structure. Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe has been appointed as a parliamentary commissioner representing the opposition. In this role, he will take part in key administrative decisions in Parliament and represent opposition interests at a higher institutional level.
In another important appointment, Jinja South East MP Paul Mwiru has been named the Opposition Chief Whip. This position gives him the responsibility of organizing opposition members in Parliament, ensuring attendance during key sessions, and guiding them on party positions during debates and voting.
These appointments reflect NUP’s effort to strengthen its presence and coordination in Parliament. By maintaining Joel Ssenyonyi in his leadership role, the party signals confidence in his ability to continue leading the opposition effectively. At the same time, the new roles given to Nambeshe and Mwiru aim to improve discipline, communication, and unity among opposition lawmakers.
The leadership arrangement also highlights the importance of strategic planning within the opposition as Parliament continues to handle national issues. With these positions confirmed, the opposition is expected to present a more organized front in upcoming parliamentary sessions, especially on matters affecting governance, accountability, and public service delivery.
