2867 People Below 35 Years Died In Road Accidents In 2024 - Traffic Report

The Directorate of Traffic and Road safety in Uganda police has confirmed that a total of 2867 people below the age of 35 which are mainly the youth perished in road accidents last year.
This shocking information was revealed by Director Traffic and Road safety AIGP Lawrence Nuwabiine during an interview with Spyreports at police headquarters in Naguru.
"We registered a total of 5144 people who died on road crashes last year and the youth comprised of half of the total," he said adding that male comprised of 80% while female were only 20%. Nuwabiine further shocked us when he said most of fatal accidents occured on Sundays.
"Can you imagine on Sundays there are few cars on the road but shocking and surprisingly that is when we registered high number of death," He said.
He added that Saturday and Friday followed respectively. "Most of the youths on Sunday,Friday and Saturday drive on high speed and most of the are always drunk while others are under influence of drugs," He sounded adding most people normally make their house parties, birthdays,weddings among others over the weekend.
He further said that young people should avoid driving while drunk, also avoid driving after taking drugs to reduce on accident rates. He also said the number of serious injuries was also high totaling to over 17000 people.
"Productivity rate in Uganda is declining because majority of youths die in accidents while others become disabled," he says .
"I urge to youths who drive Subaru's while drunk to be careful because their lives have no spare parts," he added. "Every 100 accidents that occured, 45 died and majority are youth," said. He also said most of people who died in accidents were traveling in Omnibus such as Drones.
He says that Rwizi region which comprises of districts of Mbarara Ntumgamo Ibanda Isingiro, Kiruhura registered high cases of fatal accidents.
"Most people on Mbarara, Ntumgamo Ibanda Isingiro Kiruhura roads drive with impunity because they know nothing will happen on them and this is the reason they died many on the road," says a traffic officer who operates along along Mbarara- Ntumgamo road.
