Makerere University Guild Aspirants Arrested for Unauthorized Gathering .
Police in Kampala have arrested and detained members of the National Unity Platform-NUP Margaret Nattabi and Sulaiman Namwoza who were disqualified last week, along with several other students while speaking to reporters at the Emerald Hotel in Kampala. The two individuals had previously been disqualified from the 89th guild race at Makerere University.
Last week, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission disqualified Nattabi and Namwoza from the guild race due to an incident that occurred during a presidential debate they organized at Mitchell Hall, also known as "Kimeza," which resulted in a physical altercation.
A student from the College of Natural Sciences, Robert Sserunjogi, was injured and had to be hospitalized at the University Hospital.
According to Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, seven individuals from Makerere University, consisting of one female and six males, have been arrested and are currently being held at Wandegeya Police Station. They have been charged with organizing an unauthorized gathering.
Initially, the students had intended to hold a press conference at the guild canteen, but the university administration prevented them from doing so. As a result, they relocated to Emerald Hotel where they were later arrested by the police.
During the press conference, the students released a statement in which they called on the university management to revoke the suspension of two candidates, Isaac Byaruhanga and Arnold Muganga. They also urged the management to reconsider their decision to disqualify Margaret Nattabi and Sulaiman Namwoza from the guild race, which was announced on Tuesday.
The students also expressed their strong disapproval of the university's decision to conduct the elections entirely online and exclude any physical participation. They criticized this move and spoke out against it during the press conference.
