Bank of Uganda declares both banknotes with Mutebile and Atingi-Ego signatures legal tender.
The Bank of Uganda (BoU) has declared that both the banknotes featuring the signature of the late governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile and the new banknotes bearing the signature of the deputy governor Mr. Michael Atingi-Ego are legal tender.
BoU clarified in a statement that all banknotes issued by the BoU bear the signature of the Governor and the Bank Secretary. In the absence of the governor, the deputy governor may sign in his or her place.
“The public is hereby advised that BoU has issued into circulation banknotes, in the various denominations, that bear the signature of the Deputy Governor Mr. Michael Atingi-Ego and the year of print-2022,” part of the statement reads.
The BoU also assured the public that the legal status of the banknotes with Mutebile's signature, which is associated with earlier years of print, will not be affected and will continue to be issued in circulation alongside those bearing the signature of the Deputy Governor.
“These banknotes will continue to be issued in circulation alongside those bearing the signature of the Deputy Governor. The public is therefore advised to continue using all the banknotes in circulation to make and receive payments.”
Therefore, the public is advised to continue using all banknotes in circulation for making and receiving payments and BoU remains committed to maintaining the integrity of Uganda's currency notes and coins.
