Speakerof Parliament Rt.Hon.Aita Among and mmbers of Parliament have protested the move by Ministry of Finance to reduce Parliament’s budget by 50%, with MPs describing the decision as humiliating and demeaning to the Legislature.
"Our deduction of 50%, shall we be paid salary? You even have the courtesy to put it in bold, on a statutory vote that Parliament shouldn’t get money''. Mps said.
" The development comes at the time Parliament has been in the spotlight over corruption & wasteful expenditures, although, it isn't known whether Finance's decision was informed by findings from these social media allegations.
On the other hand, Minister of State for General Duties Hon.Henry Musasizi has today laid before parliament the draft budget estimates of revenue and expenditure for FY 2024/25.
The theme of the Budget for next FY is: "Full monetization of the Ugandan Economy through Commercial Agriculture,Industrialization, Expanding and Broadening Services,Digital Transformation and Market Access."
The total budget for FY 2024/25 amounts to: Fifty Eight Trillion,Three hundred and forty billion,Eight hundred and sixty two million,Five hundred and fifty two thousand,One hundred and thirty shillings ( Shs.58,340,862,552,130)
Legal documents also laid with estimates of revenue & expenditure for FY 2024/25 included: The Appropriation Bill,Tax Bills for FY 2024/25,Certificate of Financial Implications & List of Accounting Officers among others.
Priorities of the budget for FY 2024/25 include: Peace & Security,Road maintainance & construction of strategic roads,Standard gauge railway(SGR),Electricity transmission,wealth creation initiatives,Human Capital Development & Manufacturing.
However, Hon. Henry Musasizi, Minister of State for Finance asked Parliament to disregard statements made by the Secretary to Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi about Parliament not having powers of appropriation saying such statements aren’t representative of the Ministry of Finance.
