Ongoing Restructuring of Kireka Police Barracks, KMP Clarifies
The Kampala Metropolitan Police has dismissed the misconceptions surrounding the ongoing restructuring of Kireka Police Barracks. Recent media reports have alleged forceful evictions, a claim that KMP categorically denies.
"The Police Force is conducting a comprehensive audit of barracks land, ensuring that any removal of individuals strictly adheres to legal procedures," ASP Luke Owoyesigyire Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police said.
Investigations reveal that non-eligible persons, including civilians and security guards, unlawfully occupied barracks land, enjoying utilities without authorization, leading to inflated bills. Moreover, makeshift and permanent structures, such as bars, clinics, and market stalls, were erected without proper authorization.
In response, the Police management is committed to removing all these illegal businesses and individuals, some of whom deserted the force and are still using the premises. This exercise aims to open and preserve the integrity of police land within the Kampala Metropolitan area and nationwide. This will, in turn, enable our immediate neighbors to delineate their land boundaries more clearly.
Regrettably, certain leaders have politicized the restructuring, encouraging illegal activities such as road blockades by setting fires. This is a clear violation of the law. "Today, November 17, 2023, ten individuals engaging in such activities have been arrested, none of whom were residents of the barracks or neighboring areas," Owoyesigyire said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police emphasizes its commitment to a lawful and transparent process. We reassure the public that only individuals within police land boundaries will be subject to removal. We urge residents to remain calm and cooperative throughout this necessary restructuring.
