Students Apprehended for Issuing Terroristic Threats at School
Two Senior One students from St Charles Lwanga High School in Sheema District have been taken into custody by the territorial police in greater Bushenyi and Sheema Districts. Mwesigye Innocent and Ayebare Benon, both identified as the culprits behind an anonymous terroristic threat, are facing serious charges for their actions.
The incident unfolded when the school's leadership discovered an anonymous letter on July 5, 2023, containing threats of a terror attack. The letter targeted St Charles Lwanga High School as well as two other schools in Kasese, namely St Andrews Primary School and Kibingo Primary School. The letter was found at the entrance of one of the classrooms, sparking immediate concern among the school authorities.
Upon a meticulous investigation conducted in collaboration with the school, it was determined that Mwesigye Innocent, a 16-year-old senior one "C" student, had authored the anonymous letter. Ayebare Benon, aged 17 and a senior one "A" student, was revealed as his accomplice. The pair confessed that their intention was to frighten the school administration, who had disciplined them following a report of misconduct by the dormitory captain.
Both students admitted their involvement in crafting the threatening letter, leading to the discovery of an exercise book from which they tore out a page. This piece of evidence, along with their specimen handwritings, will be analyzed by a handwriting expert to strengthen the case.
"We would like to warn students that making threats of violence or attack or use of firearms is not a joke, but a criminal act. The two students will be arraigned in court for threatening violence and probably remanded to juvenile detention centre. We would like to also thank the school administration of St Charles Lwanga High school, Sheema District, for fighting indiscipline at the school. The school had suspended three students for alleged drug abuse. And on the 04.07.2023, they chased a senior one student in the disciplinary court after he threatened to burn the dormitory," Fred Enanga the Police Spokesperson said.
