UCC Holds Cyber Crime African Summit

Uganda Communications Commission UCC an independent body responsible for controlling all communications in the Country is holding the Cyber crime African Summit. According to UCC Executive Director, Eng. Irene Kaggwa, the summit is being held at UCC home in Bugolobi and will last for three days. She further asserts that over 30 African Countries are members of this Summit. Eng. Kaggwa adds that among the Countries present in Uganda include  Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa among others. "The Government of Uganda through UCC is profoundly proud and honoured to join hands with the Internal Telecommunications Union and AfricaCert in organising and hosting the Regional Cyber crime Summit Africa," she revealed during an exclusive Interview with Spyreports.
She further explains that the summit has given UCC a vote of confidence for which it is so thankful. "Today we live in an increasingly interconnected world where cybercrime is paramount as we have to safeguard our data, our money, our privacy and protect vital infrastructure to maintain that in our digital ecosystem," UCC boss explains during an interview.
She added that the interconnected nature of our world calls for global collaboration to effectively deal with the challenge of cybercrime in our Countries. "The Regional Cybercrime Summit for Africa aims to foster duologue about Cyber Security," Irene Stresses. She adds that the goals of this summit are aligned with the priorities of Africa Regional Initiatives by Africa Region at the world Telecommunication Development Conference 2017 in Argentina. "It emphasized building trust ,safety, and security in the use of telecommunication/ICTs as well as protection of personal information," She says.
UCC boss adds that financial technology has become a key enabler for financial inclusion. " The ICT and Finance sector have become so interdependent and intertwined that we even struggle to draw lines between where one service starts and where the other ends,"Irene asserts.
The National Chief Communicator says the tremendous growth and innovations we see in ICT sector have revolutionised and disrupted the financial system taking advantage of the fact that many in Uganda and many others developing are excluded. She adds that mobile money has democratized digital banking as anyone with mobile phone can transact with another, deepening financial inclusion in the process. " Mobile money is also convenient as transaction can happen any time of the day or night and it allows micro transaction that would otherwise be untenable in transitional banking system,"Says UCC Boss.
She adds that this largely positive reality has expanded opportunities for cyber fraud.
"Accordingly this safety and system remains a challenge," She sounds adding that it can be security risks exist even within the traditional banking system.
Eng. Kaggwa Irene further strengthens that we must acknowledge that this broadens the scope for cyber criminals who are bent on exploiting vulnerabilities in the DFS ecosystem, potentially leading to financial loss and erosion of public confidence in these services. "To close the gap and protect consumers data, money and privacy, among others, there is a great need for dialogue for international collaboration, "She sounds. UCC ED says Cyber security mechanism is in order to promote and maintain trust in the use of ICTs.
