Woman Arrested for Disposing of Newborn Baby in Pit Latrine.
A 25-year-old woman has been arrested by police for allegedly disposing of her baby in a pit latrine shortly after giving birth. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the woman is currently in custody for the crime.
The incident was reported by a resident of Kabaga-Kayanga in Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, Ms Belinda Bulyaba, who found bloodstains in the new mother's room upon returning from work on April 10. When Ms. Bulyaba asked the woman what had happened, she remained silent. The suspect was left at home while Ms. Bulyaba went to work.
She told police that the following morning, she heard a baby crying inside the latrine. “I asked her about the baby, she kept quiet and that is when I decided to take her to police”, she said.
The police acted on the complaint and arrested the suspect, who is now being held on suspicion of attempted murder. The baby was rescued alive from the pit latrine by the police fire brigade and taken to a medical center for treatment. “The baby was taken to Love Medical Center by ASP Pellan Busingye for treatment, and later referred to Mulago Hospital for better management,” Onyango said.
This incident highlights the importance of safeguarding the lives of newborn babies and ensuring that new mothers receive adequate support during and after childbirth. The police have assured the public that they will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice is served.
