Africa-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly sitting in Luanda Angola, has raised concern on energy sustainability and transition with 42% of Africans, 80% of whom lack access to energy, and pushed for the European Union and other developed countries to do more to enable universal access to energy in Africa.
The assembly also pushed for investments in clean and renewable energy.
According to the memers of the Assembly, 60% of the best global solar sites and sources are in Africa, yet the continent has only 1% of global installed solar capacity.
This has to change.
''We all understand the dangers of fossil fuels, but we need a fair and just energy transition that won't keep Africa in poverty. Even if we exploit our fossils, the emissions of Africa won’t exceed 4% of global GHG emissions'' Said the Deputy speaker of Ugandan Parliament Rt.Hon.Thomas Tayebwa .
That doesn't mean we shouldn't put in more effort to reduce our emissions. We must do more but the developed world needs to do much more. We hope that by the end of our sessions this week, we will have agreed with our colleagues on the EU side on strategies for a just and fair energy transition for Africa . Added Speaker Tayebwa
