All UPE Schools Will Have Gov't Funded Meal By 2026-Education Minister Janet Museveni
The minister of education and sports and First Lady Hn Janet Kataha Museveni has revealed that government is to provide meal to all Universal Primary Education 'UPE' schools in an effort aimed at school drop out.
''Government acknowledges the challenges parents have faced with school uniforms and meals, which have contributed too many children dropping out.To address this issue, we are implementing a nationwide school feeding program aimed at ensuring that by 2026, all Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools will provide meals. Currently, 12,000 UPE schools are participating in this initiative''. Said Minister Museveni.
She said that the government has also drafted a national feeding policy, joined the global school meals coalition, and allocated funds for this program in the 2025/2026 national budget.
''In terms of educational resources, the government is investing Sh9.79 billion to produce 9.71 million textbooks for the 2024/2025 school year. Since 2021, we have invested over Sh60 billion to provide 25.28 million textbooks''.She added.
To support teachers, the government is constructing 1,572 staff houses and ensuring that new schools meet the necessary standards for teacher accommodation. Currently, 90% of our education commitments are on track.she said.
''We are also expanding secondary education by establishing 116 new schools and upgrading six Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges into centers of excellence for key sectors.The government has successfully recruited 9,187 teachers, met international inspection standards, and is in the process of completing 114 new seed schools, with an additional 144 expected to be finished by June 2025''.The minister noted.
