First Lady Museveni Calls For Internet Censorship Laws To Limit Material Accessed By Youth
The first lady of Uganda Mama Janet Kataha Museveni has expressed the need to impose internet censorship laws in order to limit the material that youth can access.
The first lady noted this concern in an engagement with King Muswati's wife Inkhosikati Make LaMashwama at State House .
"Legitimisation of extreme sexual rights and the LGBTQ community, which has led to some young people undergoing gender identity surgery, is another issue Africans must keep fighting against. We both demand that African culture and family values be preserved in the face of new international dangers".She added.
During a meeting, both agreed that African countries must act quickly to impose internet censorship laws in order to limit the material that youth can access.
"As both of us have observed, children nowadays are exposed to a wide range of unsuitable content on the internet, which can be harmful to their development".She said.
First lady Museveni added that Parents frequently don't know what their kids are watching revealing that several nations including those in the Arab world already have laws prohibiting offensive content on the internet but wondered why don't African countries create policies along these lines?
" It's time for us to start thinking about ourselves. We need to develop ways to safeguard our youth and take action to prevent certain information from reaching our children online".She said.
Mama Janet Museveni shared with Inkhosikati her social initiatives which include the Uganda Youth Forum, which teaches youth about HIV/AIDS prevention through abstinence, faithfulness, and condom use; supporting rural women through the National Strategy for the Advancement of Rural Women in Uganda (NSARWU) and their involvement in the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), which addresses HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation; and Uganda Women's Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), which was founded in 1986 to support orphans and vulnerable children.
