Japanese Government Extends $3.6m To Refugee Hosting Districts
The Japanese government has given out a grant of 3.6 million US dollars to promote issues affecting women and Youth in five districts, hosting the highest number of refugees in the country such as Adjuman, Yumbe among others.
The Japanese Ambassador to Uganda Sasayama Takuya while signing a memorandum of understanding with the state minister for Relief, Disaster preparedness, and refuges Lillian Abar at the prime minister’s office says that the project targeting to promote women, peace, and security Agenda in refugee settlements and host communities will be implemented by the UN –Women
Minister Lillian Abar thanked the government of Japan for consistently supporting our refugees response.
"I am happy to announce yet another support of $3.6M project through UN Women, for the implementation of women, Peace, and Security Agenda".She said.
According to United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Uganda hosts approximately 1.7 refugees making it the largest refugee host in Africa.
Pauline Kigangu the United Nations representative noted that the grant is extended to districts with high influx of refugees like Madi okolo, isingiro, Kyegegwa, Adjumani, and Yumbe which receive refugees from neibouring countries , DRC, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and Somalia.
