Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso Threaten To Exit ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is facing tough times following the three sahel nations taking a sovereign decision  to puul out from the regional bloc.

Niger,Mali and Burkina Faso have expressed their intention to quit the bloc following ECOWAS under the leadership of president Bola Tinubu threatening military action should Niger junta refuses to transfer power to civilians.

The joint communique of these three ECOWAS member states was broacasted on sunday 28th jan 2024 on the National Television of Mali and Niger as Mali and Burnkina Faso vow to fight in defence of Niger.

However,ECOWAS Commission has refuted the claims saying that the commission is yet to receive any direct formal notification from the member states about their intention to withdraw from the community.

In a communique issued by ECOWAS Commission in Abuja on sunday evening,the body said it had been working with the three countries for restoration of constitutional order.

ECOWAS noted that, Burkina Faso ,Mali and Niger remain important members of the community adding that the Authority remains committed to finding negotiated solution  to the political impasse.
