Police Summons Top City Lawyer Isaac Ssemakade Over Criminal Libel Allegations.

Police in Kampala have summoned top city lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde on a case of criminal libel. Ssemakadde is supposed to appear before CID commander Kampala Metropolitan at CPS today at 10. AM.

The meeting is regarding a case of criminal libel and offenses prejudicial to judicial proceedings

Police want to arrest me for charges that are already in court being contested as illegal null and void. Ssemakadde told Spy reports.

He said that Buganda Road court is letting this go on by refusing to fix my application filed on 4th March to contest the Jurisdiction.

However, Ssemakadde through his lawyers of GEM Advocates and Legal Consultants wrote to Buganda Road Ag Principal Chief Magistrate in a letter dated 6th November 2023 requesting a hearing date after several attempts to have his case heard since 2022 but in vain.

In opposition to SUW case No.257 of 2022 Ssemakadde filed Miscellaneous Application No 29 of 2022 in Buganda Road court citing want of jurisdiction and the same was initially fixed for hearing on 16 march 2022.

The office of the DPP subsequently notified the court of its decision to take over and continue the impugned proceedings in lieu of the private prosecutor .This was supported by counsel for the private prosocutor Rutaro Robert Muhairwe Advocate while the defence counsel objected it urging the pre-eminence of the pre-scheduled formal inquiry into the court's jurisdiction videmiscellaneous Application No 29 of 2022

The DPP's prayer was eventually allowed in a ruling of this courtdelivered on 31 july 2023,and the private prosecutor was directed to furnish the prosecution with all information pertaining to the proceedings and all documents.under his possession.The peetition reads in part.
