The Uganda Bureau of Statistics has refuted claims that the enumeration tablets used for the national housing and population census are not functioning clarifying the exercise started smoothly in major areas of their country.

UBOS Executive Director Dr.Chris Mukiza clarified that in the majority of the districts, enumeration started well with 94099 enumerators and supervisors recruited and deployed on the system but only the remaining 20000that havereported some small challenges like machine failure, and most of them were hired behind the official recruitment system by the respective local government.

UBOS management has however directed the district census officers and district census commissioner representatives to fasten assigning roles and responsibilities to the affected enumerators to enable them to perform their enumeration duties effectively.

The Census body has assured the public that the enumeration devices and census application are operating well and the enumeration exercise is expected to run until 19th may 2024.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni spared time to answer Census questions on their household before they were counted.

The Executive Director / National Census Commissioner, Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Chris Ndatira Mukiza oversaw the enumeration exercise this afternoon at State Lodge, Nakasero.

Among the High profile enumerated at the start of the exercise is President Museveni and the First Lady, Janet Museveni who were enumerated at 12:30 pm by the UBOS- Head of department for Demography and Social Statistics, Dr. Vincent Fred Ssenono.

‘’I congratulate Dr. Mukiza and his team, if this is what they are doing everywhere then it is good,’’ he said.

“I was happy with the questions because I could see that they are aiming at getting data that is useful for planning,” he added.

‘’The enumerators declined my offer of tea, stating that the rules prohibited them from accepting it. Maama and I complied with the rules, which is beneficial because some individuals might attempt to offer them alcohol, causing them to neglect their duties‘’.
