There Isn't Any One In Jail For Wearing A Beret or UPDf Uniform- Col.Deo Akiiki
UPDF deputy spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki has come out and refuted the claims by National Unity Platform Leader of opposition Hon Joel Ssenyonyi that security agents are arresting and prosecuting its members over wearing a beret or UPDf uniform.
Col. Akiiki noted that, those who were arrested an found in possesion of UPDF berets were cautioned and let free like it was done to Hon ABER Lillian.
Hw added that Olivia has other cases to answer related to petrol bombs advising Hon Ssenyonyi to always get facts right before complaining
This resulted from Post by Hon Senyonyi on his twitter handle that Hon. Lilian Aber, an NRM MP who wore UPDF uniform was let off the hook while Olivia Lutaaya, an NUP supporter is in jail for over 3 yrs for wearing a red beret with a People Power badge.
In september 2019, Uganda government designated the red beret as official military clothing that could land members of the public who wear them in jail, a move that essentially banned the uniform of leading opposition leader Bobi Wine and his supporters.
The beret, also worn by some soldiers, was included in Uganda’s first ever gazette of all military clothing, which states that any member of the public found in possession of the items “is liable on conviction to imprisonment for life”, under section 160 of the 2005 UPDF ACT.
NUP has always demanded release of its supporters whom they claim were arrested over possession of military items.
