Uganda Communications Commission to Launch Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) Pilot Project

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is set to launch a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) Pilot Project aimed at transforming radio broadcasting in Uganda. The launch event will take place at the UCC Headquarters in Bugolobi, Kampala, on September 28, 2023, and marks the beginning of a new era in radio broadcasting in the country.

The pilot project will run for one year and will pave the way for the eventual rollout of Digital Audio Broadcasting in Uganda. DAB+ is a digital radio technology that offers enhanced audio quality, reduced interference, efficient spectrum utilization, and additional features compared to traditional FM radio.

The project aims to evaluate the technology attributes of digital audio broadcasting, assess market readiness, encourage digital content development, understand costs and revenue models, and inform policy and regulatory requirements for the introduction of digital audio broadcasting in Uganda. The DAB+ Pilot Project will be implemented in Spectrum Band III (174 – 240 MHz).

Eng Irene Kaggwa the Executive Director, UCC says, "Radio is still 1 of the most popular means of broadcasting/information dissemination or access to a great part of the population in Uganda. However, frequencies used for traditional radio are a natural, limited/finite resource. Uganda Communications Commission is therefore looking at alternative means."
