UPDF & DRC Counterpart Capture 14 Female Rebels

The Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have announced a successful joint operation as part of Operation Shujja, resulting in the capture of 14 female rebels affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group.

Maj. Bilal Katamba, the spokesperson for the Mountain Division and Operation Shujja, revealed that, " the joint forces conducted the operation in the Mwalika Valley, located in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They encountered a group of ADF rebels led by Abu Waqas during the operation. While 14 female rebels were successfully captured, some managed to escape. The UPDF is currently engaged in pursuit of the remaining rebels to ensure their apprehension."

Maj. Katamba did not disclose specific information about the captured rebels. However, he did mention that among them is a Burundi national who had been serving as Abu Waqas's wife and had been involved with the ADF for a period of five years.

The spokesperson further revealed that Abu Waqas's group was responsible for the brutal attack on June 16, in which 37 students from Lhubiriha Senior Secondary School in Kasese District were tragically killed.

"The joint operation signifies the commitment of the UPDF and FARDC to combating rebel groups and ensuring the security of the region. Efforts will continue to bring all those involved in acts of violence and terrorism to justice," Maj Katamba gave emphasis.
