You Should Accord Elders Respect - EC Boss Byabakama Tells Youths

The Electorsl Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi has tasked the young leaders to accord their elders respect for their efforts to build the foundation and acknowledge they need for mentorship and building capacity

"Young people constitute a significant demographic of our country, with people in the age of bracket of 18 to 35 years, making close to 60 percent of our population''.  Justice Simon Byabakama noted.

'You're therefore agents of change for democratic conduct among your peers and beyond and Our association with guild leaders is one of our many continued efforts to enable you exercise civic duty, mandate of free and fair elections' Justice Simon Byabakama revealed on the body relations with future leaders.

The gathering is held at Makerere University with the aim of bringing together former and current Guild Presidents, speakers and other student leaders from universities and other tertiary institutions across the country

Among the key speakers are the former President of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete,Former prime Minister of Uganda Dr Ruhaka Rugunda,Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Simon Byabakama 

A total number of 7,392,676 youths who are above 18 years and below thirty years were registered for 2020/2021 GeneralElections which make 40.8% of registered voters (18,103,603)  EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said.

 The Guild Leaders Summit 2024 is running on the theme of the role of youth in the electoral process in Uganda.

"I started my journey as State Attorney in Fort Portal with the area covering Bunyoro, Tooro and Katonga. No vehicles and means to deliver justice across the region,"  Justice Byabakama shared his strife, raising through ranks.

He said, Guild leaders, students and the youth form a critical group in the country's governance, politics and elections, and as such a key constituency for the Elections.
