57 Deaths from 222 Bodaboda Accidents Reported Last Week, Traffic Police Reveals

During the period from 16th to 23rd July 2023, a total of 222 accidents involving Boda Bodas were reported. Among these accidents, 57 were fatal, resulting in the loss of 19 passengers and 38 riders' lives. Additionally, 146 accidents were categorized as serious, leading to 99 riders and 47 passengers sustaining severe injuries.

The Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, SP Kananura Michael says the increasing number of accidents involving Boda-Bodas is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention. "To address this issue, we emphasize the following road safety measures for both Boda-Boda riders and passengers:"

1. Helmets: Ensure that all riders and passengers wear appropriate crash helmets to enhance safety.
2. Reflective Jackets: Use reflective gears to increase visibility, especially during low-light conditions.
3. One Passenger Rule: Strictly adhere to carrying only one passenger per ride to maintain stability and safety.
4. Riding Permits: All Boda-Boda operators must possess valid riding permits.
5. Sober Driving: Under no circumstances should riders operate while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety has already implemented phase one of operations, targeting the use of crash helmets and reflective jackets. We are pleased to note that many riders have positively responded to this awareness campaign.

Now, we are entering phase two of operations, focusing on enforcing the requirement of valid riding permits. Any rider found without a proper permit will face legal consequences and be taken to court. Sensitization efforts will continue, emphasizing the importance of helmets, reflective gear, and valid permits for all Boda-Boda operators," SP Kananura intimated.

"We also urge passengers to prioritize their safety when hiring a rider. Refrain from boarding a motorcycle without a helmet or a reflective jacket. Ensure that your chosen rider possesses a valid permit for your protection.

To enhance the overall safety of Boda-Bodas on the roads, the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV) has conducted rigorous testing, evaluating 1077 riders to ensure they meet the required standards," he added.
