Bobi Wine's Designer Latif Madoi Released On Court Bail After Six Weeks On Remand.
Latif Madoi, an award winning fashion designer has been granted bail by a court in Kasangati after spending one and half months in detention.
Madoi is one of National Unity Platform that was at his fashion academy on 13 May when police officers marched into the building and arrested him and his four students.
During the recent Police crackdown on tailors and designers who make our red overalls and military like attire Madoi was arrested and some of his tailoring equipment like designering sewing machines and finished garments were seized.
Prosecutors charged the 47-year-old Madoi with possessing "uniforms declared to be for the exclusive use" of the military and police, which is illegal under Ugandan law.
His lawyer George Musisi tols media that His client was "depressed" for having cut off the dreadlocks he spent 17 years growing.
Haircuts are standard procedure for all inmates in Uganda but Mr Madoi's dreads were key to his Rasta identity, Mr Musisi says.
After visiting Mr Madoi in jail, Bobi Wine recently told his two million followers on social media platform X that the designer's "greatest pain was having to lose his dreadlocked hair".
"I publicly wear the overall that he made for me, why should he be in jail for making it?" Bobi Wine asked his X followers.
