DPP Investigating Over 40 High-Ranking Government Officials Linked to Iron Sheets Scandal
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has announced that her office is investigating more than 40 case files against high-ranking government officials and technocrats who have been linked to the iron sheets scandal.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Ms. Jane Frances Abodo stated that her team is carefully examining the files to gather evidence that can be used to prosecute those implicated in the scandal. The scandal has sparked public outrage and caused embarrassment for the government.
The DPP's investigation includes Vice President Jessica Alupo, Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), and Members of Parliament (MPs) among other junior government officials.
“There are many others pending because we opened over 40 files on all the recipients of the iron sheets, from the Vice President to the CAOs and some MPs as well. So we are investigating circumstances under which each of them got the iron sheets and then we follow up. If they went to the church we go to the church and we make our decision," Ms Abodo told journalists at Parliament.
The government is currently dealing with a scandal involving Karamoja irons sheets, which has caused trouble for around 20 ministers and 35 legislators across the country. The situation is proving difficult for the government to handle, and even high-ranking officials such as the Vice President, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija are implicated in the scandal. On Monday, Mr. Fred Enanga the Police spokesperson announced that the police have forwarded several files to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for approval.
