Judiciary Deploys over 100 in a Bid to Enhance Access to Justice

The Judiciary has taken steps to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the court system by appointing 96 new judicial officers and transferring 74 others. The appointed officers include six registrars, five assistant registrars, and 85 Magistrates Grade one. Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo stated that "these changes are aimed at strengthening the court's ability to resolve disputes promptly and uphold the rule of law, ultimately fostering public trust in the judicial process."

The decision to deploy and transfer these judicial officers was guided by considerations such as caseload and the Chief Justice's commitment to extending judicial services closer to the people. As a result of these changes, several new courts, including Toroma, Ishongororo, Busesa, Ndaija, Ruhama, Karugutu, Omoro, Kicheche, Kyankwanzi, Amudat, Maracha, and Nyadri, have become operational. Other areas that have benefited from the deployments include Atiak, Mulanda, Hakibale, Kisinga, Kakindu, Kyangwali, Kiyunga, Kyanamukaka, Kigumba, Kasanda, and Kyarusozi.

Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu expressed optimism that the increased number of magistrates will lead to reduced lead times for case disposal and backlog in magistrates courts. The expanded magisterial structure now includes 457 officers, ranging from chief magistrates to magistrates grade ones. "The deployments are effective immediately, while the transfers will take effect from September 1, 2023. These changes are part of the Judiciary's mission to administer justice efficiently and effectively," Sarah Langa said.
