LOP Mathias Mpuga Writes to Speaker of Parliament over Human Rights Violation of NUP Leaders, Supporters
Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Rt Hon Mathias Mpuuga on Thursday issued a statement on the continued abuse of human rights and shrinking civil space against National Unity Platform NUP leaders and supporters.
While addressing the August House, he described as superficial & shallow the statement by government on the human rights violations committed against NUP supporters saying, "the statement was tainted with material falsehoods and the statement was made as an attempt to just repress and clamp-down on political dissent in Uganda."
He however noted that as opposition, "Nonetheless, shall not relent from exposing the systematic human rights abuses and to plead for the full intervention of Parliament in enlisting this problem and finding a durable solution," Mpuuga.
LOP tasked tasked Parliament to explain if it is complicit in the wanton murders due to its failure to demand accountability and justice of deceased Ugandans killed at the hands of State security agencies, because the relatives of the deceased are still reeling in bereavement with no hope of ever receiving justice for the death of their loved ones.
Mpuuga listed seven demands for Gov't to meet regarding human rights violations without excuses, these include;
Full accountability for the November 2020 murders in Kampala and beyond; including the actions taken on Police 999 Patrol 17, and others listed above whose occupants were well captured by different media houses and vigilant citizens, shooting live ammunition towards unarmed citizens and intentional killing of oppositin supporters in questionable accidents.
Accountability for all arrested Moslem clerics and ordinary moslems throughout the country! A minority faith having majority prisoners.
Accountability for all the reported 18 disappeared Ugandans (as confirmed by the Uganda Human Rights Commission).
Accountability for all political prisoners rotting in numerous jails without trial.
Release of all political prisoners in the Court martial.
Demand that the Minister of Justice appears before Parliament to detail the House on detention without trial.
Accountability for killings by the Military in various fishing communities.
