Museveni Orders CID, Statehouse, DPP to Prosecute Minister's Involved in Stealing Karamoja Ironsheets.

President Yoweri Museveni has tasked the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the police to begin an investigation into how relief supplies, such as iron sheets intended for the Karamoja subregion, were handled.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga claims that the joint investigations have since begun.

“As you are all aware, H.E. The President has directed for an expeditious inquiry into allegations of theft of iron sheets and other relief items that were meant for Karamoja region, following increased complaints from the intended beneficiaries and other concerned citizens”.

The police spokesperson claimed that as a result of the president's order, the Director of Public Prosecutions directed the Criminal Investigations Division to oversee the investigations in collaboration with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

He explained that the team would build on previous investigations and collaborate with related organizations including the IGG and a legislative panel looking into the same.

“We shall interact with concerned personalities to ensure an expeditious investigation. Now that we have a task force in place, we shall be giving progressive updates to members of the public on the investigations.”

The announcement by the Inspectorate of Government, Beti Kamya, that her office has requested all the government actors to explain their roles in the Karamoja iron sheets debacle is the background to the latest development.

“I have already written to all of those people that have been named in the papers, and also whose names were found in distribution stores of the OPM, from the Vice President, the Prime Minister and all the ministers,”Kamya said on Sunday.

Kamya on Sunday said that she had already written to all  those that have been named in the papers, and also whose names were found in distribution stores of the OPM, from the Vice President, the Prime Minister and all the ministers.

“I have already written to them to explain their part, whether they requisitioned, where they took them. That’s why we want to know if it falls within the relief programme of your area.”

The development also comes at a time when the parliament has begun an investigation into the tale in which a number of ministers and other high-ranking government officials distributed aid materials, such as iron sheets intended for the vulnerable in the Karamoja subregion, among themselves.
