Over 90 iPhones Worth $60,000 Found Abandoned at Entebbe Airport.

Customs officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) stationed at Entebbe International Airport have reported that they discovered more than 90 iPhones, both new and second-hand, which were left unattended on a conveyor belt on Sunday. The individual who abandoned the devices remains unidentified.

According to Simon Esunget, the current manager of Entebbe Customs, the passenger who left behind the iPhones arrived at Entebbe International Airport on an Egypt Air flight. The passenger carried personal luggage, which included two audio subwoofers. The luggage was then sent to the Non-Intrusive Inspection scanner for X-ray screening.

The examination of the luggage through the Non-Intrusive Inspection scanner uncovered both the hidden iPhones and the subwoofers. The total value of the smartphones found was estimated to be $60,000, which is equivalent to approximately Shs222 million, as confirmed by URA.

URA has now implemented stricter measures for screening passengers entering the country in order to make the process smoother for genuine travelers and to discourage any attempts to hide smuggled goods.

URA spokesperson Ibrahim Bbossa said, “URA has deployed non-intrusive inspection (NII) technology which has proved to be very effective in unearthing tricks used by travelers to smuggle in goods carried as personal baggage, an allowance given by the airlines.
