Parliament to Pay Tribute to Late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah  One Year After His Passing.

During this week's plenary sessions, the Speaker of Parliament has announced that special moments will be dedicated to paying tribute and commemorating the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah. She praised him as a remarkable individual who was a mentor and served his country with immense dedication.

The Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anitah Among has announced that during this week's plenary sessions, special moments will be dedicated to paying tribute and commemorating the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

She praised him as a remarkable individual who was a mentor and served his country with immense dedication.

Ms Among released a statement on Monday via her Twitter account, stating that the legacy and integrity of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah should be celebrated. She highlighted that his leadership had been an inspiration to many leaders who work towards a better country.

“On this day one year ago, the cold hands of death snatched from us our dear leader, brother, father and icon, Rt. Hon Jacob Lo’kori Oulanyah. We celebrate his legacy and continue to be inspired by his passion for leadership of integrity,” the speaker’s statement read in part.

Today marks the first anniversary since the passing of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, who passed away on March 20, 2022, after succumbing to cancer. He had been flown to Seattle, United States, for specialized treatment prior to his passing.

“As we celebrate his legacy, it is the right time to have that debate that he so much wanted to facilitate, the debate on the Uganda we want. May his legacy inspire hope in all of us to work for a better country,” Ms Among stated.

In honour of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah's services to the country, a memorial service will be held today at All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero. The service will serve as a celebration of his life and contributions to Uganda.

In addition to serving as the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah was also the vice-chairperson for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party for northern Uganda. Since his passing, this post has remained vacant.

Last week, Oulanyah's family to inquire about the promises made during his funeral and whether they had been fulfilled. The family reported that they are steadily working to secure the fulfillment of the pledges made last year.

According to Mr Deus Agaba, the personal assistant of Andrew Ojok, Oulanyah's son who was elected to succeed him as the Member of Parliament for Omoro County, an eight-member committee led by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo was established to follow up on these pledges.

Last week, Oulanyah's family revealed that they are steadily working to secure the fulfillment of the pledges promises made during his funeral last year.
