Police Sweeps out City Assailants Using Panga Wielding Machines to Rob Ugandans.
Police in Gayaza Trading Centre, Gayaza Ward, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District, have arrested five suspected armed thugs who were behind a spate of attacks in the area.
The suspects were identified as Kawoya Charles (male juvenile, 17), Sekubuge Akiram 23, Mwesigwa Enock 32, Sagara Denis 27 and Mwanja Ivan31). However, Nekesa Rachael, the wife of the suspected commander, Richard Mwesigwe, is still at large.
Police Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Luke Owoyesigyire, said they received information about the group's activities and conducted surveillance in the area before carrying out the operation.
During the operation, Owoyesigyire said they recovered eight sharpened pangas, six pit axes, five spanas, two motorcycles (UEF 094E Yamaha red in colour, UEK 221S Bajaj boxer red in colour), and a box containing nails.
“Further investigations are ongoing, including a search of the suspects' homes and efforts to trace those still at large. The police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities”, Owoyesigyire added.
The residents have commended the police officers for their swift and efficient actions, which have averted a potentially dangerous situation. The suspects will be charged with various offenses, including planning to commit a crime, illegal possession of weapons, and endangering public safety.
The police have also assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order and urged them to continue to cooperate with the authorities in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
