Security Chiefs, Ministers Warned On Road Impunity
The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety in Uganda police has issued a strong and last warning to security chiefs and Ministers who have increased impunity on the that has resulted in the death of innocent Ugandans.
This was revealed by the Director of Traffic and Road Safety Lawrence Nuwabiine while addressing the media at police headquarters in the Naguru Kampala suburb.
According to the recently released crime report, over 200 vehicles belonging to security chiefs, Ministers, and other VIIPs were involved in road accidents due to impunity on the road.
"72% of pedestrians who died were knocked while crossing or walking along the road," reads part of the report. It adds that a total of 145 innocent pedestrians were knocked dead while standing
. "All these innocent lives were killed by people who claim to have immunity on the road," says a Senior traffic officer. "Security chiefs and Ministers drive with a lot of Impunity on the road and when we try to condemn them, some fight us, others pull guns on us while others threaten to fire us and we find ourselves with no option," Another traffic officer says.
Nuwabiine says all those who use impunity on the road whether who or what will be dealt with accordingly. "We have designed a cabinet paper regarding impunity on the road and we are waiting for the final decision and we start taking immediate action on their officers," he says.
He added that people owning government vehicles should be humble and save lives for others.
"Having a government car does not give you impunity on the road, he gambles while using that car," he says adding that the day they leave those offices, will realize that impunity was not necessary.
